NAIDOC Week is usually held in the first week of July, Sunday to Sunday, and incorporates the second Friday which historically was celebrated as ‘National Aboriginal Day’. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. It was postponed this year due to COVID-19, and will run from this Sunday 8 November through to Sunday 15 November.
The NAIDOC Week 2020 theme – “Always Was, Always Will Be” – recognises and celebrates that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC – the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee – invites all Australians to embrace the ancient history of this country, a history which dates back thousands of generations.
At Warradale Primary School we will be recognising and celebrating NAIDOC week with whole school activities, including rock painting, dream time stories and games. We will share these learning opportunities at the end of the week.
